about

"Torn and Bruised" is an imagined monologue by Captain James as he and his crew try to fix their ship (The Henrietta Maria) during a snowstorm at Weston's Island in mid-August, 1631.

lyrics

I can't feel the bottom
Of the bathtub
Porcelain
There's just sand, it's
quite a way to be caged up, and

See the Henrietta,
She's a broken part of me
Riding low, she isn't
Mine, and that's fine, you know

I won't pretend I've been right
But I will keep fixing holes
Where I see them splinter
'Till you sail away

I'm a squeeze-box father
Always out and back again
I feel one
With the sea, but not with my son

I'm a reckless captain
I'm just a writer, anyway
All is lost, in this
Sea of ice, and the permafrost

I won't pretend I've been right
But I will keep fixing holes
Where I see them splinter
'Till you sail away
